Site Studies

Before I made my moving trip from sunny Orlando, FL to not so sunny (but much less humid) Portland, OR, I had a little open invite get together to say goodbye to friends in the area. Unfortunately, everyone ended up showing up in the afternoon so I had to find a way to kill time between 10am (where nothing is open at Downtown Disney) until my first friend was able to arrive.

I'm usually awful about carrying around a sketchbook on me, and when I think I won't have time to draw I typically leave it home. I've learned since then. I brought one of my smaller sketch pads and decided on what to do. As much as I enjoy drawing people/figures, at Downtown Disney there are either too many people, or people (children especially) are there and gone in the blink of an eye--so I opted to just draw scenery instead.

Prior to my first drawing I started to draw a little girl who was waiting along with her parents nearby. I made the mistake to take my time and be detailed, which prompted my shift to quick, indistinct sketches of people to occupy the surrounding area.

By far my favorite of the two sketches. Working on this image made me want to keep up with scenery drawing.

This past weekend I was out in Lincoln City, OR. It was my first visit out to the West Coast beach, and the water was cold. Really cold. Despite being a painful level of cold for someone used to Florida beaches, it was gorgeous, and I worked on the image above on the last day of my visit.

  1. That one of the coast looks exactly like the Oregon coast. Love it!
